38-year-old Mohammed Amin Malik was killed hours after he allegedly snatched a rifle from a Policeman inside a camp of the Special Operation Group of Jammu Kashmir Police in the Tral area of South Kashmir’s Pulwama district.
A Police official said that Amin took total control of the interrogation room and engaged the Police personnel by firing intermittently from the snatched weapon. “Sensing grave danger to the lives of Police personnel and that of Amin, his mother, and Executive Magistrate were brought on the site and repeated sincere efforts were made to persuade him to through away the weapon and surrender.”
Amin displayed complete defiance to such persuasions and not only refused to surrender but also fired upon the Police party engaged in persuasion, the official.
“One of the Police personnel was hit with a bullet on the chest and survived because of the bulletproof jacket he was wearing,” he said, adding that “After failing of all efforts to ensure his surrender, the terror operative was engaged in a gunfight following the rules and SoP of such engagement and was neutralized.”
Family Sources told The Kashmiriyat that Amin, a resident of Nagbal area of Tral who was a brother of a slain Militant, Shabir Ahmed Malik, an associate of Zakir Musa, is survived by two young children, Abrar and Nouman, one aged 8 and another 13.
He said that Mohammed Amin Malik, son of the late Abdul Ahad Malik, a resident of Tral, was a former militant who took up arms in 2002 and was arrested in Tral Bazaar in 2004. He was released after spending three years in jail. “Since then Shabir has been working as a labor.”
Meanwhile, in 2018, his younger brother Shabbir Ahmad Malik took up arms and he remained active with Ansar Ghazwa-ul-Hind for a year and was killed during an encounter in 2019 in the forest near his native village. “Since then the family was harassed constantly, Amin was picked up several times,” they told The Kashmiriyat.
One week ago, police and Government Forces raided his home and seized a 12-bore rifle during a search operation, Police said, adding, Mohammed Amin was not at home at the time. He said that the police had called him to for questioning.
“Two days later he went to the SOG camp on May 29 where he was detained,” the family member said.
The Jammu Kashmir Police said that a case was registered against him under No. 48/2021. Police said that on Wednesday afternoon, the former militant snatched his rifle from an officer named Majid Ahmed and opened fire on him, leaving him critically injured.

His mother and younger brother were brought to the camp to surrender but he refused to surrender and at around 4 AM he was shot dead.
In this regard, IGP Kashmir Vijay Kumar said, “A suspect was questioned in SOG Camp Tral when he opened fire and injured a Policeman.” He said no other officer was taken hostage here while SSP Awantipora tried his best to persuade him to surrender.
The police official said that the snatched weapon was recovered from the possession of the slain.
