Migrant Worker from Assam Sells 15-Year-old Daughter because of Lockdown

Driven by extreme poverty and lack of work during the lockdown situation, a migrant labourer from Assam, reportedly sold his 15-day-old daughter for 45,000 INR, but police rescued the baby. The man and two women have been arrested on the charge of human trafficking, Police has said. Dipak Brahma, a resident of Dhantola Mandaria, a forest area in Kokrajhar district, had recently returned from Gujarat, where he worked as a labourer. He was jobless and finding it hard to support his family, according to an official of an NGO working against human trafficking. After his return, the family started living at the house of his in-laws in Kochugaon Patakata village in the same district.

As the revocation of Jammu Kashmir’s special status is set to complete one year on August 5, the former chief Minister of Jammu Kashmir, Farooq Abdullah demanded the restoration of Article 370 provisions for the people of Jammu Kashmir. Farooq called for the restoration of Jammu Kashmir's statehood and said he hoped that the Supreme Court would render justice by striking down the repeal of Article 370 provisions. In his first media interview post the abrogation of Article 370 on August 05 that ended the erstwhile state’s special status, he said that his party would continue to contest the changes through all democratic means. Five Youth Arrested in Central Kashmir Over Stone Pelting Charges

At least five youth were detained in an overnight raid in Nasrullahpora village of central Kashmir’s Budgam district, police said. However, locals alleged that the police resorted to vandalism and arrested many youth during the raid, which they said created a ‘mayhem” in the village, located around four kilometres from the district headquarters. When contacted, SSP Budgam, Amod Nagpure confirmed the arrests of five youth from the village over “stone-pelting” charges. He, however, denied any claims of damaging the public property. Violent clashes had erupted in the village in May earlier this year, in which a police officer suffered head injuries.
