Speculation ends: Moulana Hami will not contest upcoming elections

Top Islamic cleric from the Kashmir valley has denied joining electoral politics in the near future.

A news has been circulating since yesterday that Moulana Ghulam Rasool Hami, one of the most renowned preachers from Kashmir valley was likely to join electoral politics.

A close aide of Moulana Ghulam Rasool Hami said that the political wing of the organisation was deliberating upon the thought, however, Moulana Hami has on Wednesday evening made a call of not entering into active politics.

“He will clarify the matter infront of the press today. Moulana Ghulam Rasool Hami is not joining any political party nor does he any affiliation to any,” the aide said.

Earlier, speculation was rife that Moulana Hami, the chief of Karwani Islamic will contest polls from Beerwah Budgam, but the latest development puts these conversations at risk.

The Kashmiriyat has reported that various religious and social outfits from Kashmir valley are planning to step into the electoral fray.

Jamaat-e-Islami, a religious outfit from Kashmir, is awaiting approval from the central government to enter the electoral fray. Formerly a key separatist group in the Valley, Jamaat-e-Islami is seeking the removal of a government-imposed ban in order to participate in the upcoming polls.

After a decade-long lull, the political landscape in Kashmir is now buzzing with activity, fueling widespread speculation and rumors.

The Election Commision of India recently announced that elections will be conducted for Jammu Kashmir assembly polls in three phases starting September 18. The counting of the polls will take place on October 04.
