Urs of Famous Sufi Saint, Dastgeer Sahab Commences in Kashmir

The annual Urs of Sheikh Syed Abdul Qadir Jeelani (RA), popularly known as Peer Dastageer Sahib (RA) is being observed in the Kashmir valley.

In Srinagar, the Urs is being observed in Khanyar, Asaar e Sharif Aanchar Soura and the Dastageer Sahib (RA) Sarai Bala, while the urs is also being commemorated at various places in South and North Kashmir. In South Kashmir, an 11-day urs is being observed at Hazrat Reshi sahab’s Khankah in Islamabad (anantnag) township.

The 11-day-long Urs began on Monday.

The Khanqahs and the markets around wore a festive look, as hundreds of traders located around these Khanqahs are heavily dependent for their trade upon on the visitors who visit the Khanqah.

The Khanqahs have an important economic significance as hundreds of markets in Kashmir have settled around these Khanqahs with thousands of traders trading various commodities, but all the trade is dependent upon the devotees who visit the Khanqahs.

“The markets settled around these Khanqahs and these Khanqahs have been providing livelihood to our families since many generations as it is the devotees who established the markets and were our primary customers,” Abdul Gani Khan, a trader from Khanyar said.

The Urs as per the Islamic calendar commences on 1st day of Rabi Al Sani, and hundreds of devotees visit the Khanqah of Dastgeer sahab (RA) from all over the Kashmir and Chenab Valleys.

Wakf Board has said that hand sanitizers have been made available for devotees. “Social distancing is being maintained and the premise is also being regularly sanitized,” the Waqf Board said.

Meanwhile, Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) has said that it carried a special sanitation drive at the three Khanqahs in Srinagar.
