With the Fall of Kandahar and Lashkar Gah, Taliban now in Control of 13 of the 34 Provincial Capitals

On Friday, the Taliban claimed that they have captured Kandahar, the second largest city of the country and also a key southern city of Lashkar Gah.

The capture of both these cities comes as a major blow to the Afghanistan government.

“Kandahar is completely conquered. The Mujahideen reached Martyrs’ Square in the city,” a Taliban spokesman tweeted.

It is said that the military and government officials evacuated the city of Lashkar Gah after coming to terms with the Taliban.

On Thursday, the Taliban had captured the third largest city – Herat.

The Taliban is now in control of 13 cities of the 34 provincial capitals in Afghanistan, within one week, destabilizing the Afghan government.

The U.S. is yet to completely evacuate the country of its troops by the August 31.

Pentagon has reportedly reduced its staff in its embassy in Kabul. And as per U.S. intelligence’s assessment, Taliban might take over Afghanistan within 90 days.
