France plans to ban the abaya, a long loose-fitting overgarment worn by some Muslim women, on school grounds, the country’s education minister said on Sunday. Gabriel Attal told broadcaster TF1 that the government intends to convey “clear rules” on the matter to school officials across the country. Attal also said he wanted to speak with the school officials starting next week to help them enforce the ban on the robe-like dress that covers the entire body. The decision is the latest in several limitations on Islamic clothing in France, where critics say the government has targeted Muslims with statements and policies in recent years including a claim by President Emmanuel Macron that the religion is “in crisis,” raids on mosques and charitable foundations, and an “anti-separatism”...

The long incarcerated journalist Asif Sultan, on Sunday completed five years in jail. He is currently booked under the Public Safety Act (PSA) and lodged at Uttar Pradesh. One of his family members confirmed to The Kashmiriyat that Asif had been booked under the draconian PSA and shifted to the Kot Bhalwal jail of Jammu, but he was later shifted to Agra Central Jail in Uttar Pradesh. It is pertinent to mention that Asif, who has been incarcerated since 27 August 2018 was granted bail by a court in Srinagar on April 05, 2022. Pakistan on Monday claimed that Ghias, a resident of Oli village of Kotli district, was killed in 'unprovoked firing' at the Line of Control (LoC) in the Nikial sector. “Emphasizing the need for maintaining peace and tranquillity at the LoC, it was underscored that such acts are in clear violation of the 2003 Ceasefire Understanding, reaffirmed in February 2021,” the Pakistan Foreign Office said. An Islamabad trial court on Saturday declared Imran Khan guilty of “corrupt practices” in the Toshakhana case and sentenced him to three years in prison, reported the Dawn. The court also imposed a fine of Rs100,000 on the PTI chief. Imran was indicted in the case on May 10 after a criminal complaint was filed against him by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) for concealing details of Toshakhana gifts.
