Four dead, several missing as boat crossing Jhelum capsizes in Srinagar

Four persons  lost their lives, three others were reduced after a boat capsized in overflowing river Jhelum near Batwara area of Srinagar.

Locals told The Kashmiriyat that on Tuesday, a boat ferrying at least twenty people including school going children capsized while crossing the Jhelum river in Srinagar.

This led to the drowning of all those on the boat triggering panic in the entire area.

Immediately after the incident, a rescue operation was launched and seven persons were evacuated to the hospital. Those evacuated to the hospital include mother and her two sons.

Hospital officials said that four persons have died in the incident while three other are undergoing treatment.

Those who lost lives were identified as Shabir Ahmad (26), two unidentified women aged 32 and 18 years respectively and Gulzar Ahmad (41).

Pertinently, the incessant rainfall across Kashmir valley has swelled the water in tributaries of Jhelum and Jhelum is flowing almost at the danger mark, as per officials.

At 10:00 am, the gauge at Ram Munshi Bagh measured 15.67 feet, just below the warning level.

Conversely, in south Kashmir, there’s a comforting trend of receding water levels, providing a sense of relief. According to officials, at the same time, the gauge at Sangam recorded 16.79 feet, Pampore over 15 feet, and Asham 8.98 feet, indicating the downward trajectory of water levels in these areas.
