China Sanctions US Lawmakers over Hong Kong Move

China, after the United State’s (US) sanctioned Hong Kong and Chinese officials accused of curtailing political freedom in Hong Kong, decided to impose sanctions on 11 United States citizens which included some US  lawmakers from US President Donald Trumps’s Republican Party.

China’s sanctions are the latest round of measures between China and the US over accusations of rights abuses and interference.

Chinese Foreign minister, Zhao Lijian addressing the press said, “In response to that wrong U.S. behavior, China has decided to impose sanctions on individuals who have behaved egregiously on Hong Kong-related issues.”

The 6 lawmakers from the US Republican party have been vocal critics of a new national security law that China imposed on Hong Kong in late June. The US lawmakers include Senators Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio, Tom Cotton, Josh Hawley, Pat Toomey, and Representative Chris Smith – as well as individuals at non-profit and rights groups.

China had also targeted Cruz, Rubio, and Smith when the US penalized Chinese officials over the treatment of Uighur Muslims.

The US Congress party took these Chinese sanctions as a compliment.

Recently the US had imposed sanctions on Chief Executive Officer of Hong Kong, Carrie Lam, along with some former police chiefs.

There has been an escalation in tensions between China and the US over various issues like trade and the novel coronavirus that the US solely blames China for. President Trump recently even gave statements against China in wake of his re-election campaign.

Beijing’s latest measure includes sanctions against the heads of five US-based, non-government organizations. All five groups had been subjected to sanctions in December in connection with their positions in Hong Kong.
