J-K admin renames historical Government Degree College of Anantnag

In an ongoing process to rename schools after slain government force personnel, the historical Government degree college for Boys in Anantnag has been renamed.

Established shortly after the partition of India and Pakistan, the college was granted a recognition in the year 1972 and was the sole college operating in the four districts of southern Kashmir.

In an official communique, of which a copy is available with The Kashmiriyat, the admin has renamed the Government Degree College Anantnag in Khanabal after DySP Humayun Muzammil Bhat who was killed during an encounter in Anantnag district last year.

The order also called for renaming of 32 other institutes spanning across Kashmir valley and Jammu division.

In Srinagar, Government Boys High School, Narwara, Srinagar, now bears the name of Late Masroor Ali Wani, Inspector. Masroor was shot dead by suspected militants in Eidgah of Srinagar when he was playing cricket.

Here is a complete list of the name changes in Jammu division:

Government High School (Lehar) Sungal, Akhnoor, Jammu, is now named after Late Rachhpal Singh, HC.

Government High School, Chak Malal, Zone Khour, Tehsil Khour, District Jammu, has been renamed in honor of Late Vishal Sharma, Rfn.

Government Middle School, Urliyan, Udhampur, is now called after Late Krishan Singh, Subedar.

Government Girls High School, Mantalai, Udhampur, has been renamed to honor Late Yash Paul, Rfn.

Government High School, Ajote, Poonch, now bears the name of Late Abdul Majid, Havaladar.

High School, Galigarh, Kishtwar, is now named after Late Ravi Kumar, Rifleman.

Sargali in Ramban is home to Shaheed Tanveer Ahmed Memorial Cricket Ground, honoring Late Tanveer Ahmed SPO.

Government High School, Sungal, Jammu, is renamed after Late Krishan Singh, LNK.

Government Middle School, Dharam Khoo, Jammu, now bears the name of Late Dhian Singh Salaria, NK.

Government Higher Secondary School, Gharota, Jammu, is now called after Late Sham Singh Langeh, Rfn.

Government High School, Majua Uttami, Jammu, bears the name of Late Parshotam Kumar, Naib Subedar.

Ramsoo Chowk in Ramban is now  Irshad Ahmad Chowk, honoring Late Irshad Ahmad, SgCt.

Neel Chowk in Ramban is now Abdul Rehman Malik Chowk, in memory of Late Abdul Rehman, HC.

Shankar Singh Road, Ukhral to Bhangra, Ramban, now honors Late Jagdish Singh, SPO.

Ind Martyrs Road, Ramban, is named after Late Nisar Ahmad, SgCt.

SPO Shaheed, SPO, in Ramban, is now Shaheed Shadi Lal Chowk.

Other educational institutions and roads in Ramban are also renamed after individuals like Sher Singh, Mohd Iqbal, Fareed Ahmad, Angrez Singh, Naseeb Singh, Jattu Ram Mob, Mohd Saleem, Anar Singh, Abdul Majeed, Naseeb Singh, Dhaler Singh, Sarfaraz Ahmad, and Abdul Qayoom.

In 2020, the Jammu Kashmir admin initiated the process of renaming government schools, public infrastructure and roads after the names of government force personnel killed in the line of duty since which hundreds of places have undergone name changes.
