The Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change Monday informed the Rajya Sabha that the total cover of forest land of Jammu Kashmir has decreased by 420 Sq Kms between the year 2015 to 2019. The Ministry shared the information in Rajya Sabha in response to the question raised that includes the details of the increase/ decrease in forest cover during the last 3 years, deforestation programs, and funds utilized during the past year. Jammu Kashmir Union Territory is “slipping” into a “debt trap” as its liabilities have mounted over Rs 83000 crore. Official documents reveal that J&K’s liabilities have piled up to Rs 83573 by 2019-20- up by Rs 4513 crore from the preceding financial year. The overall debt outstanding against Jammu Kashmir Government was Rs 79060 crore by 2018-19. According to the documents, Rs 13487 crore liabilities were raised by J&K in 2018-19 and Rs 11999 crore in 2019-20. Jammu Kashmir’s coronavirus caseload rose to 128249 as 152 more people tested positive for the infection while one more person succumbed to the virus in the last 24 hours, officials said on Friday. Of the fresh cases including 50 travelers, 31 were from Jammu Division and 121 from Kashmir Division, the officials told GNS.
